A True Hidden Gem: “Lovesick”

where to watch: Seasons 1-3 on Netflix

when to watch: When you want an adorable rom com tv-series with ridiculous characters

you should note: Sadly, it wasn’t renewed after Season 3. Definitely still worth watching though!!

tl;dr: If you like romantic comedies, and especially if you like British romantic comedies, watch this funny, sweet series.

Okay, okay, I promise this is my last rom-com series for a while. But this one is just so good! Especially in case you already went through all of “the Hook Up Plan”, here’s another super underrated rom-com series on Netflix.

Lovesick is what every rom-com should be: funny, charming, and a little emotional. The main characters are in turn hilarious and aggravating. It’s an absolute delight to watch, and I think it’s a genuine shame that most people have never heard of it.

the premise

Dylan is an utterly hopeless romantic. (Side note: I love that this show is about a guy that’s obsessed with love for once). None of his relationships ever seem to go well, despite his best intentions. So when he learns he has chlamydia, and has to notify every girl he’s ever slept with….he’s not looking forward to it. Grudgingly, Dylan begins calling them one by one in alphabetical order.

This premise opens up a world of possibilities for the show.  To start, the show jumps from one of Dylan’s romantic encounters to another, irrespective of time. We get to know our main characters, Dylan, Evie, and Luke by seeing them in every kind of situation, from weddings to college parties to weekends in the countryside. We get to follow the characters as they are now while also learning about their history with each other.

While this premise opens up the fluidity of the timeline, the show knows when to break from form and focus on the present.

why it works

The use of flashbacks works so well because in many ways, every episode is a mini rom-com gone wrong. You see Dylan try to find love, and repeatedly fall short. In the process, there’s a lot of hilarious antics and a big helping of unrequited love. The back and forth between flashbacks and the present day always keeps the series fresh.

The show also just exceedingly funny. The characters are easy to love and root for, while also just being completely hilarious. Lovesick marries romcom with sitcom perfectly, and that’s ultimately what makes it SO GOOD.

You may have heard of or tried watching Mindy Kaling’s Hulu series “Four Weddings and a Funeral. ” I highly encourage you to skip that and watch Lovesick instead for a healthy dose of wonderful British rom com. The show is sweet, funny, and all the characters are so entertaining. Go discover what seems to be one of the least known shows on Netflix!
